THINKING ABOUT THE CALIFORNIA BALLOT INITIATIVES

Pillbox for voters.

Pillbox for voters.

California voters have a lot to think about this November when it comes time to vote.  The presidential election is on the minds of everyone, but we have 12 more propositions to vote on.

Proposition 2 has to do with our farm raised food and requires calves raised for veal, egg-laying hens and pregnant pigs be confined only in ways that allow these animals to lie down, stand up, fully extend their limbs and turn

around freely.  Aside from the animal rights perspective, the concerns are for food safety, environmental impact and also helping smaller, family farmers be competitive as larger “factory” farms are more likely to practice these confined methods.

Proposition 3 is basically a bond measure which authorizes $980,000,000 in bonds, to be repaid from state’s General Fund, to fund the construction, expansion, remodeling, renovation, furnishing and equipping of children’s hospitals.  Proposition 6 is a criminal justice initiative for tougher punishment for gang crimes, drive-by shootings, meth distribution and victim intimidation.

Props 7 and 10  are two ballot initiatives focusing on alternative energy, Prop 10 on fuel and prop 10 on wind and solar which would  require California utilities to procure half of their power from renewable resources by 2025.  There are major concerns that the proposition as written will cause established, small renewable energy companies our of business, and that it is poorly written and so complicated that it could hurt the cause of renewable energy in the state.

Proposition 8 would eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry in California. The California Supreme Court unequivocally held that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry under the California Constitution.

Proposition 11 is called the Voters First Act, it creates a citizen’s commission  to make independent decisions leading to legislative boundaries based on fairness and the public good and not political aspirations.

Proposition 12, a Veterans Bond,  authorizes issuance of $900 million in bonds to create a fund that assist veterans who are purchasing farms, homes and mobile home properties.

A lot to think about and read about and become an informed voter.  Remember to vote, November 4th!

MY BOOK CLUB MEETING

I love to read. Always have. I was the kid who made the other kids climb on thebook ornament bookmobile to check out books when the books I desired were greater than the number I was allowed to check out. My mother-in-law was known to say she smokes in the shower – well, I read at stop lights.

So no surprise that I am in a book club. It is my second one – the first faded our when we all made the transition from at home moms book markto back to work moms. I was invited to join a group attended by one of my non-reader friends, so I was a very pleased to find that this group was well organized and actually spent a great deal of the evening discussing the book!

Each month the person who chooses the book hosts the group. January was my month. I chose Case Histories by Kate Atkinson which I read some time ago an liked a lot and when I found that a second book with some of the main characters was out – I thought I would re-read the first with book group and then jump into the new one all primed up. The main character is Jackson who in the first book was a detective with several cases working which, turns out, were interconnected. Rather than being a detective story or a mystery story it is those things and character study and a story of love and loss and a discussion about the ability to keep those you love safe.

So I am making Almond Cake with Raspberry Sauce and Double Chocolate Cookies and veggies with dill dip and some assorted hotChocolate desserts little finger foods. Putting out some wine and bottled water and sodas, pulling out every chair I have got and arranging them in a big conversational group and leading the discussion tonight.

I can’t wait to see what we are reading next!

YOU ALWAYS REMEMBER YOUR FIRST POST

Fleur de Lis Stamp BoxHello out there. This is my first post, my first blog. I have been reading blogs for a while now and it does inspire me and made me want to join in. I work for Kyle at Kyle Design. Her blog is Color Style Kyle. She blogs about being an artist, her inspirations and family and how she brings it all together. We have talked about blogs from the point of view of the employees here in the studio. Especially when we have had a run of wacky phone calls. Or are ranting about the general frustrations of dealing with internet shoppers. So that is a starting point.

I love art both functional like Kyle’s and decorative. My home is filled with color and art. I collect art glass. I have purchased art at street fairs, galleries, on eBay and from friends. When I can’t buy it I try to get an image of it to savor.
I also am a self taught mosaic crafter. I am not an artist! But I love the craft of mosaic and I am good with color and design and it is a great hobby.

Where from here? A bit of the art in everyday life. Some insight to the life of an e-commerce worker. A lot of excitement about Kyle’s work. A peek at mine.
