This time of year baking becomes an obsession for many. My daughter is testing cookie recipes for her holiday give-away plates. I have been asked to share a recipe in an online cookie exchange.
I have never been able to master candy making, but I am a cookie making machine during the holidays. this year, though, I may jump into the cupcake frenzy.

Kyle and I were talking about pill boxes the other day. I mentioned that I have several of them – she laughed at herself, because here in the studio we have hundreds of pill boxes of all sizes and shapes, and she only has one that she tries to remember to move from purse to tote to luggage, etc. It’s the old “cobblers kids have no shoes” thing.
I always say that pill boxes are a great gift because everyone can use one or two. so even if they already have one – one more just makes life easier. I have a seven day pill box on my bathroom counter. I have the bubbles design like the one shown. It is much

nicer to look at than a couple of prescription bottles sitting out (and for me, out of site is out of mind.) I fill it with my morning and evening doses for the entire week. Then if I get off routine, or I am not sure I remembered to take my meds, I can look at the compartments and see.
I also have one in my purse. That one is a large round shape with the spiral design. I carry OTC pain medicine with me all the time – it’s just a mommy thing to do. I also have a back-up of my daily prescription in case I forget to take it or I decide to run off to Fiji or something. I have another pill box in

my gym bag with the same stuff. I frequently occasionally go to the gym in the morning before work and I need my prescription and my vitamin with me.
You would think with that many pill boxes I would have enough, but no! I also have a square one in the tote bag I carry to the kids games, the farmer’s market and all those places where I don’t want my purse, but I need to carry “stuff”. That one is the peace symbol design with our pretty apple color behind it.

Each one of my pill boxes is different. Different designs and colors and sizes and shapes. I have also given pill boxes to my parents and to my kids. They have them in their sports bags, their desk, luggage or back packs. My youngest carries antacids in hers.

THE RIGHT GIFT

I know a lot of people are still unsure how the economic downturn is going to affect how they celebrate their holidays. We typically say we will spend less during the holidays than we actually do. The last few years it seems that retailers have started discounting in November and having blow out sales in December – which always seems to motivate people to spend more than they planned.
This year for me it is going to be about getting the right gift – not the best deal. Deals can be exciting – but more and more I see that the deals are not really such a deal. The size of the package has shrunk. the number of items in the box has been reduced. The “free” shipping is made up for in the “handling” charge. The quality of the item is not what it once was. It all just reminds me of that old adage about no such thing as a free lunch.
So – the right gift. Not one that has been marked down, not one that might fit. Not something they might

not already have. The right gift for everyone on my list. And how will I do that? By choosing things that are really personal and useful. Things that tell the person that I put a lot of thought into their gift. And I can do that for each person on my list.

IT’S FALL

Our studio is located in a very nice business park. We have lots of big shady trees that are turning color.

we can look across to hills which are slowly being covered by grape vineyards. When I am driving too and from the studio I go past a field which is planted at various times of the year. Just now they are harvesting pumpkins. Down the road is a very famous corn maze. They usually have pumpkins and farm animals and similar attractions for kids.

A couple of years ago we looked out the window to see a flock of turkeys walking down the street. Someone must have called the folks at the corn maze and they rounded them up and took them back, but one turkey had eluded them and lived in the “wild” of the business park for a couple of years. We saw her several times a year strolling around, but she has either been captured or otherwise occupied lately.

strawberries…there are still lots of bright green veggies in the market and last week I still found some fragrant basil. The market gets smaller as the fall goes on. My daughter likes to go with me to get cupcakes and other baked goodies.

And there is football, and cheerleaders and Homecoming dances. That is the stuff my daughter is enjoying this fall. My husband and I took a long bike ride Sunday and enjoyed the late blooming roses in the park. A cool wind blew from behind as we took the trail home. One of the great rituals for high school student in the fall is to celebrate Homecoming. They don’t even make an effort to include alumni as they did in my day, and I don’t think the kids even know that it is supposed to be for the alums in the first place. They just want to go to the dance, and maybe the football game.
So the time had come for the big shop. My daughter had a whole outfit in mind based on some things she had seen months ago in the store..I knew that it was as unlikely those shoes and that dress would still be around as that she would choose a modest dress which could be worn over and over. When I was a girl, the most popular nail and lip color was called Fire and Ice. The ad campaign started in 1952 and carried over for years because the concept of being good and bad, a lady and a tramp was very appealing to those women confined in girdles and gloves.
By the time I was old enough to wear lipstick, it was not popular to look made-up, so fire and ice was out. but I don’t think that the appeal of duality is ever out.
