HAPPY ROSH HASHANAH – L’shanah tovah
Rosh Hashanah is one of two High Holidays in the Jewish religion, the other being Yom Kippur, which occurs 10 days after Rosh Hashanah begins. Rosh Hashanah, literally translated as “head of the year,” is considered the Jewish New Year, it is a time to reflect on the misdeeds of the past year and to vow not to repeat them. That is why it is also frequently referred to as the Day of Remembrance.
The 10 day period between the holidays is known as The Days of Awe, and is a time to make amends with people you have wronged and make resolutions for the coming year. Yom Kippur follows and is referred to as the Day of Atonement, the day the “book” of the next year is closed and those who have repented are granted a happy new year.
All Jewish holidays begin the evening before the date specified. This is because a Jewish “day” begins and
ends at sunset, rather than at midnight. If you read the story of creation in Genesis Ch. 1, you will notice that it says, “And there was evening, and there was morning, one day.” From that passage, the Jewish people infer that a day begins with sunset, so the holiday starts at sunset the night before the day shown on your calendar!
These holidays are considered the High Holy Days of the year, they are purely religious and not, as are many of the holidays, attached to a seasonal celebration or a historical one.
L’shana tovah – For a good year!
SHOPPING WITH MY TEEN
One of the great rituals for high school student in the fall is to celebrate Homecoming. They don’t even make an effort to include alumni as they did in my day, and I don’t think the kids even know that it is supposed to be for the alums in the first place. They just want to go to the dance, and maybe the football game.
So the time had come for the big shop. My daughter had a whole outfit in mind based on some things she had seen months ago in the store..I knew that it was as unlikely those shoes and that dress would still be around as that she would choose a modest dress which could be worn over and over. So my tactic for this trip was to “go along and get along’ as much as I possibly could. I would
keep positive thoughts washing through my brain and believe that those perfect items would still be hanging around Macy’s in her size.
They weren’t. But we gamely went through the racks and she was not terribly insulting when I held a dress up for her approval and I was determined not to take her jabs to heart. We went into the fitting room with
8 outfits and quickly and without rancor sorted down to 4 and then something amazing happened. She asked for my opinion, I gave it, she didn’t argue with me and we agreed on a darling hot pink halter dress – and it was $19.99!!! OMG.
So we went back to the shoe department with happy hearts and as we were thinking we would head to
another store, she saw some zebra print shoes. We both liked them, they were in her size and reasonably priced and we bought them. She took pictures of the dress and the shoes on her phone and broadcast them to her friends. She is so happy and I am so relieved.

MATH, SCIENCE, CHEMISTRY – GIFTS FOR GEEKS?
My son is a math major in college, he wants to be a teacher. Yes, he is a wonderful young man. We were
looking at a web store that has lot’s of math related t-shirts. He was laughing hysterically at some of the designs. I did not have a clue what they meant. (His father is the brains behind the tree from which he dropped.)
Kyle created some new designs, including chemical symbols like the caffeine
and alcohol molecules and the atom and stuff, I wasn’t sure why, but my son has shown me there are a lot of people who do know and are into math and science designs. Some of those people proudly call themselves geeks, some are teachers, scientists, chemists, mathematicians and engineers. My son loved the 2 new math designs. His girlfriend wants to give him the Fibonacci Sequence on a flask for his 21st birthday. A flask with the alcohol molecule in it would be fun, too.
We also have more creative designs suited for astronomers and more general
scientists and students. We also added designs for electronics and electricians, even a little light bulb. We have an atomic , and a carbon 6 atom design. And themes for inventors and people interested in robotics.
We hope we have covered many themes of science so there will be an appropriate gift for everyone on your list this holiday season and beyond.

IS IT FALL YET?
Here in Northern California, Fall is an odd season. I know people say there are no seasons in California, but there are – it’s just that Fall starts in late October and ends sometime after Christmas and then winter lasts, oh, about 2 months and then Spring starts in March and goes until June when it is Summer again. That is if you go by the temperature and deciduous tree cycles. It is all fine with me, except that the palette of the falling leaves in December clash with the traditional Christmas colors.
Anyway – we always know when it is supposed to be fall because of the new TV season!
You can’t really go by the sports programs because they seem to start playing football in July – but when the new season of House comes on – Hurrah! it’s fall. I must admit that I have not seen any new shows that look appealing, but I am happy that Pushing Daisies is coming back after the strike shortened season, and I am an avid fan of Lost and Gray’s Anatomy. I watch Survivor and The Amazing Race with my husband – he loves those, but his favorite is House. My daughter and I watch Hero’s together.
So this week is the start of the Fall Season. The Emmy show last night sort of kicked it off. I love to watch for the fashions, but enjoyed the antics of Ricky Gervais and seeing the Mad Men cast out of costume.
I am also happy that more of the actors and producers pointed out the incredible value of the writers. The make or break of a show for me is the
writing. One of the main reasons I love Lost is that it is so unpredictable and different. I am rivited by the writing in House and Mad Men. And love the comedy infused in the drama of Grey’s Anatomy. I am discerning about what I watch, but I admit I look forward to my shows starting up again soon.

TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY 2008

Pirate condom case - when the pick up line works - "That’s the finest pirate booty I’ve ever laid eyes on."
Talk like a Pirate Day occurs every September 19. What started as an “arrgh” over a missed handball became and annual event because, well, talking like a pirate is fun! The, now 7 year old ITLAPD has evolved from just a fun day into a major party day and in 2008, because there are good mateys everywhere, into The Year o’ th’ Philanthropic Pirate.
The official ITLAPD website gives information on fund raising or, as they put it : “Plunder for philanthropy” because “There be no end o’ good causes that could use an infusion o’ doubloons.” The site is fun and full of advice for parties, costumes, and of course how to talk like a pirate. The pick-up lines
for pirates are funny, as is most of the information on the site. they offer books, t-shirts and even patterns to “Knit like a Pirate, an idea which we incorporated into our alternative knitters design last year.
For great pirate gift ideas, consider our flasks and cigar cases. We have pirate business card cases for the professional buccaneer, too! For the less flamboyant sea dog, consider a anchor or sailboat design gift.

GOOD GIFT CHOICES IN TOUGH FINANCIAL TIMES
The big news last week was “Killer” Hurricane Ike – but the big storm turned out to be the one on Wall Street
this week. Not that it came on as fast as Ike. Those really watching what has been going on in the last couple of years could see that what goes up, must come down.
The market will eventually correct, and hopefully financial institutions will become more conservative in their dealings and offerings. In the meantime, I think a lot of good can come of this financial melt down. Actually, I think it is already happening.
There are some very smart women who have joined together to take control of their finances. The Women in Red , a support group on MSN Money offers advice and support for women working to get their finances in order – to get out of debt and into “financial sanity”.
Many people I know have been looking harder at how they spend their money. Packing lunch to take to work, cutting down on luxury coffee drinks, spending less at the mall and putting more thought into their purchasing choices. And now the holidays are coming…
This might seem like a strange discussion for a retail company blog, but we see our products as quite functional and useful things. A business card case as a gift makes more sense than yet another tie. A lovely pill box is more useful than designer bath salts. A night light can be considered an energy saving device! An eyeglass case keeps your expensive eye wear safe, and a new personalized badge holder or lanyard will perk up your appearance at work, even if you can’t buy a new suit.
So when deciding how to spend your hard earned money this holiday season, consider a functional art gift from Kyle Design.

LIPSTICK, POLITICS AND OTHER COMBINATIONS
Okay – so we are jumping on the political band wagon a bit here – but it is our new special brand of crazy now that we have these design combination opportunities. We run around the studio saying things like – how about “key to my heart!” and Kyle makes this. How about the feet and the caduceus? A Podiatrist Card Case!
Then someone else says “OH! the earth and the flames – Global Warming!!”
We had not remembered when McCain made the remark about putting
lipstick on a pig during the primaries, but of course the same remark got lot’s of attention this week when Obama repeated it – and what did we get from the etchers? Our new lipstick design! We are sooo current.
Technorati: McCain, Obama, lipstick, pig, combination designs, business card case, business card holder, card case, global warming, earth, flames, feet, doctor, podiatrist, caduceus, politics, key to my heart, design, environmentalist card case
RAIN OR SHINE – A TALE OF TWO COASTS
It is nearly fall in Nor Cal which means it is really, really hot. My daughter had her first soccer game of the season on Saturday and it was 105 degrees. I was roaming the sidelines taking pictures, chugging iced tea and assessing my blood pressure. When A came off the field at the end of the game we had 20 minutes to get across town for her SAT prep class.
She was trying to pull of her sweaty clothes and change into something to wear to the class when she burst into tears of frustration and exhaustion. I listened to her rant and wail and drove her straight home for a shower and a Popsicle. She was a little late – but in better shape for the class. She is a sophomore in high school this year and her homework load is much heavier than freshman year – she spent most of
the weekend watching all the Harry Potter moviers and doing homework. She is at the age where she worries about looking like a nerd, but still enjoys playing The Sims and watching Harry Potter.
My older girl called to say her eye exam indicated the need for glasses, so she has been having fun picking out her first pair of specs. I have been wearing eyeglasses since grade school and so has her dad, so we have been surprised that the twins have gone all this time with no need of correction. A was not so lucky. So M was sloshing through the streets of Philadelphia in the rain brought by hurricane Hanna to go pick up her first pair of glasses, calling me on her cell to complain about her feet getting wet. There I was in the hot sun thinking that wet shoes sounded very refreshing. Each of us wishing we were there…
