PIRATES IN PLEASANTON?
I knew something was up when I was pedaling to our Farmer’s Market and there were pirates strolling down the street. A man and woman in full, colorful pirate costume are not the usual visitors to our little suburban town of Pleasanton.
I continued on to purchase my berries and basil and pedaled back to see the pirates going into a sushi restaurant. Ok – now I have got to know what is going on. So I did what any suburban woman would do – after I washed my produce and put everything away, I googled local events.
Ahoy! I had my answer. Ye Olde Velosity Circus Pirate Academy is appearing In San Francisco June 23-27, 2008. The ” team of slightly unprincipled, playfully deceitful scoundrels and rascallettes will teach children how to walk, talk and present oneself in only the most proper pirate ways.” The Academy will teach nautical knot tying, sword skills, storytelling, a mermaid cove and pirate lingo. Arrrgh.
This is one of the many events and activities scheduled during the Festival of Sail San Francisco. There will be a parade of tall ships and activities on land and sea, including hands- on activities for children and families, ship boarding, an International Village and Green Village featuring environmental organizations and exhibits related to marine life.
So set sail, drive your carrrgh, shiver your timbers and get down to the Festival of Sail!

THERE’S A MAN IN MY KITCHEN
I have known my husband for over 25 years. He has never cooked a meal – oh, he has fed the children in my rare absence, he warms things up and occasionally makes a sandwich for himself . He has said he would be a great cook - he just hasn’t actually cooked.
Until last week. He bought a book about sports and nutrition and out of all the information there, he focused on the beans. Pinto beans. Oh, and how you can make them in a crock pot. He was surprised to find that I do not have a crock pot – so he set out to determine which one he should purchase so he could make his beans. He came home with the world’s largest crock pot. A recipe for cooking a whole turkey came with it. It is programmable. It is manly.
After asking me where to find and how to identify a few items at the store, he went to buy his ingredients. He found everything he needed including the fresh cilantro and dried beans. He was very excited to find
dried lima beans, too. He pulled out a bowl I judged a bit small to soak the beans, but i decided that I would answer questions he asked, but otherwise not inject myself into his cooking process.
He completed the beans a couple of days later. They were spicy and a bit al dente. He said next time he would pay more attention to the soaking part of the process. I served some with our dinner and he has put the rest in the freezer. Now he is asking questions about cake ingredients. Apparently there is a recipe for crock pot blueberry cake.
Now were cookin’.

MY FAVORITE FLIP FLOPS
My favorite flip flops had to be thrown away last week. It was so sad. I got them at The Gap about 5 years ago. As soon as I realized how wonderful they were I went back to buy more, but they were all gone in my size.
When I was a kid, flip flops were called thongs or zories. I never liked them much back then, but when they became popular a few years ago, I gave them another try. Now I have a closet full of them, although unlike my daughters, I only wear them in the warm weather.
I was shopping the sales for summer clothes for my daughter, and found 4 new pairs of flip flops – white, bone, red and hot pink. We got her some with polka dots. I am happy with the new additions, but I can already tell none of them will fill the loss of the retired favorites.

CELEBRATE JULY 4th
When I was a little kid I loved the 4th of July. We lived in the very hot San Joaquin valley town of Stockton famous for it’s inland port and for asparagus. We spent most weekends away camping, but it seems like we always stayed home for the 4th. There was a park in the older part of town that had a lake or pond in the middle and we would picnic on the grassy slopes and then lay back to watch the fireworks show.
When I was older we moved to Walnut Creek, closer to San Francisco. We had a
parade every 4th going through the neighborhood and ending at the swim club. Everyone wore red, white and blue. Kids decorated their bikes and rode along the parade route waving at their families sitting on the
sidewalks. We didn’t have any fireworks close to home, so unless my dad was willing to suffer through all the traffic, we usually didn’t see any. But he frequently bought sparklers which we waved around with much excitement – I loved those things.
Now I am the parent who needs to be cajoled into getting into the traffic jams surrounding the fireworks displays. It really isn’t hat hard to talk me into it because I remember so well my delight as a kid.
Happy 4th of July!
